FISD ATHLETIC LEADERSHIP CAMPAIGN
2008-2009
At the beginning of the 2007/08 school term, FISD launched a new organization called C.L.E.A.R. (Clean Living Encouragement and Responsibility) at the high school and the junior high. C.L.E.A.R. is a student-led organization with two goals: 1) to change norms about drug and alcohol use among youth; and 2) to increase awareness about alcohol and substance abuse issues. Student members agree to voluntary drug testing and they participate in related social, service and educational activities.

No Additives 1
Last year, FISD athletic director Steve VanMeter agreed to challenge his football team and their parents at their back-to-school meeting to sign up for membership in CLEAR. By noon on the next day after the parent meeting, CLEAR had its first 50 members as a result of the leadership role taken on by the football players and their parents. This energetic start helped CLEAR to far exceed its original goal of 300 members and to ultimately recruit over 900 members in its first year. No Additives 2

When we signed students up for C.L.E.A.R, we asked each of them the following question "Do you consider yourself an athlete?"  When we analyzed the CLEAR membership roster 67% of FJH members and of 65% of FHS members responded "yes" to this question.  So, a CLEAR majority of the membership is made up of athletes and this group of students becomes a natural leadership group for the student community.

This year (2008/09), the athletic department is kicking off a special campaign to involve the community in the message of alcohol and substance abuse prevention. The student-led campaign will work to publicize the fact that the majority of students pledge to be alcohol and drug free and believe that clean living is a vital part of an athlete’s proper development.

The athletic leadership campaign slogan is: Mustang Horsepower: No Additives to be followed by a fully developed campaign involving students and parents taking the message out to the community.

The campaign will involve:

  • student athletes once again leading the drive for membership in C.L.E.A.R.
  • Mustang Horsepower: No Additive posters produced for sale (at cost) to students, businesses and families
  • special cut-out stand-up posters and counter top posters being produced for sale (at cost) to local businesses
  • production of banners, bumper stickers and other stickers for mass distribution
  • Channel 16 footage on the campaign
  • additional future photo campaigns focusing on other sports
